What Kind of Doors Do I Need in My Shed?
It depends on what you're planning to put inside. The biggest mistake we see is picking a door too small, then a year later trying to fit a riding mower or a big piece of furniture through a 4ft opening that just won't work.
That's why double doors are so popular on sheds. Each door is usually about 3ft wide, so you can open just one side for quick trips in and out, or swing both open for a full 6ft opening when you need to drive in a mower or carry in something bulky.
Why it matters
Doors are one of those things that are cheap to plan for up front and expensive to fix later. Once your shed is built and sitting on your property, widening a door means real work — not just picking a different option on an order form.
Think ahead to what you might store down the road, not just what you're storing on day one. A lot of folks start out just needing space for tools and boxes, then a couple years later want to park a mower, ATV, or golf cart in there too.
Real examples
Single 4ft door
Good for sheds used mainly for hand tools, boxes, and yard supplies where you're just walking in and out, not driving anything through.
Double 3ft doors (6ft total)
The most popular choice. Open one side for everyday access, or both sides when you need the full 6ft opening for a mower, wheelbarrow, or large furniture.
Wide doors for equipment
If you plan to store a riding mower, ATV, or golf cart, plan for at least a 6ft opening now so you're not stuck later.
Common mistakes
- Sizing the door for today onlyPicking a narrow door because that's all you need right now, then getting stuck when you buy a mower or bigger equipment down the road.
- Assuming you can widen it laterChanging a door opening after the shed is built is a lot more work and cost than choosing the right size at order time.
- Forgetting about everyday convenienceGoing with a single wide door for everything means you're swinging open a big door just to grab a rake. Double doors let you open small or big as needed.
