What floor thickness should a shed have?
A quality shed floor uses at least 3/4-inch decking (plywood or OSB) laid over pressure-treated floor joists on 16-inch centers. That combination gives you a floor that feels solid underfoot and holds heavy items without flexing or sagging over time.
Be wary of 5/8-inch or thinner decking or joists spaced 24 inches apart — common cost-cutting moves that produce a bouncy floor. And the joists should be pressure-treated, since the floor framing is closest to the ground and the moisture that causes rot.
Why it matters
The floor takes the most abuse in a shed and is the most expensive part to fix later. A thin floor on wide-spaced joists feels cheap immediately and fails early — so floor spec is one of the clearest signals of overall build quality.

The bounce test
Stand mid-floor and shift your weight. A 3/4-inch floor on 16-inch centers stays firm; a thinner floor on 24-inch centers noticeably flexes.
Pressure-treated matters
Floor framing sits closest to ground moisture. Treated joists are what keep the base from rotting first.
Common mistakes
- Accepting thin decking5/8-inch or thinner floors sag under mowers and shelving. Insist on at least 3/4-inch.
